Games that play well at two

Created 2026-09-18 · 18 games ·

This list is for games (mostly from my collection) that I would recommend for two players but that usually also work well at higher player counts (Games that I will exclusively play at two are here). I sorted these that the games that are more difficult to learn are at the bottom of the list. I put some classics on top of the list because I think these are games everyone should have at least considered. This list is by no means complete, I am mostly trying to have a variety of games here.

1 Pandemic Pandemic ↗ (2012)
9 plays · last played 11/10/14
Pandemic and most of its myriad iterations including and recommending to graduate to the Legacy edition if you enjoy the game. When we play this with two everyone gets to have 2 characters. The game that made cooperative games popular. And it is still good.
2 Azul Azul ↗ (2018)
4 plays · last played 3/13/21
This floor building tile layer really plays well at all player counts (2-4). We're getting to the lighter end of the list. This is the OG version that got everyone so enamored that it spawned a bunch of sequels. Our favorite is Azul Stained Glass and the most complex is Azul Queen's Garden.
3 Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries ↗ (2008) Wishlist
(I do not own any copy of any Ticket to ride except as an app). This is my favorite map for the train route building game. An absolute classic that will help you figure out if you like route building games... and train track building This map allows a maximum of 3 players and so I think it works perfectly with two.
4 Cascadia Cascadia ↗ (2021)
92 plays · last played 6/14/26
What is not to love: nature, animals, two nice additions to your small piece of nature every round and hex fields? Variability is included in the box and with the changing point scoring mechanisms you can (to some degree) scale the complexity a bit. Also wonderful as a solo game.
5 Splendor: Marvel Splendor: Marvel ↗ (2020) Previously owned
1 play · last played 2/20/22
This is a slightly improved version of Splendor that introduces an additional mechanism that you need to fulfill certain basic requirements to end the game. Splendor is a quick and barebones engine builder where the more cards you have played the fewer chips you need to draw to build more cards. A very satisfying game arc and it is set up in very little time and easy to learn. I have never played Splendor at any player count but two... it might as well be on my "other list".
6 Kingdomino Origins Kingdomino Origins ↗ (2021)
1 play · last played 4/8/22
Having only played the original and this one, I think this is my favorite iteration of the domino kindom building game. It is light and quick but the new modules included here add just a bit of welcome complexity.
7 Space Base Space Base ↗ (2019)
13 plays · last played 1/25/23
Surprisingly, this plays well at two. We have a house rule that we throw the dice one time between our turns to simulate additional players. This speeds up the game immensely.
8 Wingspan Wingspan ↗ (2019)
17 plays · last played 8/15/25
A bird habitat builder. I recommend staying away from the expansions for a good long while. The base game has more than enough birds to keep the game interesting for a while and the combo-ing gets far more difficult with more cards.
9 Miyabi Miyabi ↗ (2019)
1 play · last played 3/27/20
A surprising tile laying-and-stacking game with polyominoes in which you build your garden but you can only place in each column once per round so be careful with the tile drafting or you'll be left with a bad tile.
10 Menara Menara ↗ (2018)
2 plays · last played 10/16/21
A cooperative stacking game that plays well with any player count and has some interesting choices to make. Excellent!
11 The Castles of Burgundy The Castles of Burgundy ↗ (2020) Previously owned
5 plays · last played 9/25/20
The Stefan Feld classic where each player gets to build up their own little duchy with hextiles. Each round throw two dice and see which actions you can do with those numbers: buy a tile or place a tile? Has some nice combo opportunities. My favorite Feld game.
12 Whitehall Mystery Whitehall Mystery ↗ (2017)
A hidden movement game in London. One person can play the police and the other gets to try and escape...
13 Star Wars: Outer Rim Star Wars: Outer Rim ↗ (2019)
3 plays · last played 3/9/23
But only with the Unfinished Business expansion. This is a lovely adventure game that evokes all the best moments from the OG trilogy and possibly some of Clone Wars and Rebels. You get to fly the Millenium Falcon and do a Kessel Run if you play your cards right. Or force someone to gamble away their fortune to you ... assemble your crew and become the Pirate King of the Outer Rim. The basic playing mechanism is pick up and deliver and fights can be dicey with luck. We play this for its thematic charm...
14 Décorum Décorum ↗ (2022)
4 plays · last played 10/22/22
A cooperative game about passive aggressive house decoration. Possibly impossible at higher player counts, we haven't tried those.
15 Obsession Obsession ↗ (2020)
13 plays · last played 6/10/26
Who gets to marry one of the heirs of Alderly Hall? Jane Austen inspired tile laying worker placement with a heart.
16 Ark Nova Ark Nova ↗ (2022)
37 plays · last played 8/22/25
Zoo building game with a huge deck and an interesting action selection mechanism. As this game leads to thinking downtimes playing with more than two can sometimes be a lengthy process. In truth I think I prefer this solo. But if you want to melt your brain about birds, reptiles, and elephants, this is your game.
17 A Feast for Odin A Feast for Odin ↗ (2016)
9 plays · last played 10/22/22
The hugest worker placement game with polyominoes that exists. Once you get over the realization that the number of worker spots is smaller than it seems (because in each row the spots are mostly the same) and when you add the expansion this is a really great game.
18 Spirit Island Spirit Island ↗ (2020)
82 plays · last played 3/15/26
My favorite game. My favorite spirit count is two. I either two-hand this or play with a friend. A complex cooperative card game on a map with very unique player powers.
