Cascadia BGG ↗

My BGG Comment

Cascadia is one of my favorite games after I initally balked at acquiring it because I liked Calico so much. But Cascadia is more relaxed and it seems like these days I very much like that. I like the way it builds up my landscape and the various solo challenge modes a lot. It also plays very nicely multiplayer. I will not play with a full 6 players (with the expansion) again. That just takes forever. Highly recommended game that can be played with anyone--including 5 and 6 year olds! Rating 8.5 2026 After 89 plays. I initially dismissed this because it was less brain burny than Calico. Oh, how I was wrong about this game's decision being boring. This is one of my very favorite cozy games that I can play anytime. I prefer solo or small player counts. We once played with 6 with the expansion and it became this huge, long game... not recommended. I like to play some of the challenges that are at the back of the rulebooks of the base game and the expansion. They force you to adapt to some additional parameters and give you specific setups which ups the replay value of the game even more than it already is. As a bonus it is super quick to set up and the solo plays in under 20-30 minutes. I always play with the expansion tiles but I vary everything else. The expansion is very good but not needed to complete the game. Can't wait for Alpine Lakes. Rating 9

Easy to teach, too. * Keeper: Absolutely. Replay value remains very high especially with the expansion. It's like comfort food for my brain at this point. * Recommended: For anyone age 6+ who likes animals, the Pacific Northwest and/or hexagons * Competition: Harmonies (pattern + terrain building), Calico (pattern building), Sanctuary (hex tiles + animals)

Build a landscape of hexagons and populate it with animals. It‘s cute, it‘s nature and you will always end up with a beautiful landscape. Who cares about scores when you now have this wonderful forest filled with bears who eat the salmon from the river and the deer who live next-door? Why it is cozy? * Everyone gets their own landscape * Interaction happens only through drafting * You get to do something on every turn, it is incredibly rare to be unable to place the animal tile. * Unless you play with 6 it plays quickly * Difficulty can be scaled with the choice of animal cards. * Probably don‘t play with Landmarks or the tea might grow cold * It‘s pretty and colorful

What is not to love: nature, animals, two nice additions to your small piece of nature every round and hex fields? Variability is included in the box and with the changing point scoring mechanisms you can (to some degree) scale the complexity a bit. Also wonderful as a solo game.

Almost my favorite tile layer. With the huge variation and the challenge modes, I can play this over and over. This was somewhat unexpected I admit. Also from here on out all the games retained last years spots on the list. Ranking last year: 4

I played this a lot less than the year before. But it remains incredibly satisfying to build up a landscape. I think over the years this has come to be a reliable classic but it is less exciting sometimes than newer games in my collection. Solo Plays 2025: 15 Rank Last year: 3

The first time I tried Cascadia on the „demo“ app they had put on github I decided it was too simple compared to Calico. And it would get boring so fast. So I didn‘t back the KS. But then friends got it and told me it was good. So I got myself a copy and haven‘t stopped playing since. I am currently trying to play through all the Landmarks Solo Scenarios, I think I won about two thirds so far. Lovely puzzle, beautiful results on the table and quick to play. Which is one important aspect of many of my solo plays because I often play them in those small slivers of time before work or dinner that might otherwise be occupied by a good book. This moved up a little with the Landmarks expansion and its challenges Solo Plays 2024: 25 Ranking last year: 4 (🔺1)

#4 This only arrived here in the cardboard recently, though I had played it online before. Because it is very new to me „on the table“ I am quite excited to play right now. The gameplay is so very satisfying, each turn you get to place both a hex tile (I love hex tiles—see Calico) and an animal token. Both contribute to your score. Each turn two good things happen. The solo is as easy as Calico, just Slide Over something to the discard and refill the market. The different setups using different scorings for each animal make each game unique. Love it. It may slide down when it is not as new. But maybe it won‘t. See my #3
