Firefly: The Game – 10th Anniversary Collector\'s Edition · English edition · (2024)
Your rating:
2026 After 1st play. As a fan of both the original show and space exploration games, when this went to crowdfunding I had to get it after initially dismissing it as "yet another badly implemented media franchise game". But it came with recommendations from other fans of the space exploration genre and so I bought the Firefly-coffin-box. This was actually the first full play after receiving it a good while ago. I had always planned to play this with a specific group of fellow Firefly fans but this play never materialized and so I made do with a 2 player session instead. We played without any of the expansions. The similarities to Star Wars: Outer Rim (especially with the expansion) are unmissable and that game and Xia are definitely the biggest competition for Firefly. We enjoyed our session and it renewed my hopes of getting it to the table at 4 players sometime soon. As much as I like these space exploration games, they are all similarish concerning the gameplay and have pretty big rulesets for what amounts to very light games. There is more story-telling in these games than fascinating gameplay mechanics and that needs to be taken into account when deciding if this is a game you need to play/own. I usually avoid story-driven games but Firefly somehow manages. But it lacks the puzzly bits I enjoy most about boardgames. Definitely an outlier in my collection. The thing I like least about this game is that once again the box is bigger than it strictly had to be. Yes, the playmat is nice and the box dimensions certainly have to do with this. But this thing eats table and shelf space as if it didn't matter (space is big!). And the big plastic could certainly have been made with less air remaining inside. This definitely costs the rating a point. Rating 7
