My BGG Comment

This game feels like work. We are one third through our first campaign now. The game is very pretty, the story has an interesting premise. The story telling is also pretty good. We struggle however with the challenges and the fights. We probably didn‘t build ourselves up properly and we spend most of our turns trying to think on how to recover our hitpoints or our exhaustion and in a sad reminder of 7th continent we keep spending valuable actions on gathering ingredients for food just so we can keep going. The actual „game“ part of the game seems to be a lot of book-keeping and I am not enjoying the fights a lot so far. Better weapons have been beyond our reach and it‘s been rather frustrating to hit and enemy with a difficulty of 7 when your best fighter only has a 50:50 chance to hit them for more than 1 damage, there are squares that need at least 2 damage and your best fighter can take 2 counterattacks before dropping out of the fight. I was afraid this was just as much „Choose your own adventure“ and randomized combat as 7th Continent and it is. Why do these games never have good gameplay. Oh wait… Gloomhaven does. But I guess we‘ll try and finish this first campaign and maybe start a second one on easy mode.

Storytelling games are not my thing. The gameplay is so mediocre it detracts from the story.

I don't like the game much. But the cover is definitely great (the new one is even better but didn't qualify for my list). It a case of cover and title being so evocative that one really has to play the game. And I probably should give it another go.
