Description

You are the director of the Observatory. With your telescopes aimed at the stars, planets, and nebulas of the Oniverse, you are ready to launch daring spaceships into the skies. Stellarion, the seventh entry in the Oniverse series, is a deck-management game. All the cards you need are split into eight decks, and you know the contents of each one. You'll need to manage all these resources to ensure that you have the right cards available at the right time. —description from the designer

My BGG Comment

This is the game that made me realize that all the Oniverse games really are what I know of as Patience games (it says so on the box lol). They are of course modernized and have added art... I have previously played Onirim and Aerion and now Stellarion. There are a couple of elements in the rules that could be more precise (when do you show the new card on top of a deck in regards to doing an action). This one has an interesting setup as the setup is always the same 8 decks. Each deck just gets shuffled, the top card revealed and go. (Note: each deck gets its very own discard pile) The top 4 decks are by card type (planet, star, spaceship and nebula--or whatever--it could be 1 2 3 4) and the lower 4 decks are by suit. So 4 suits, 4 types, each card exists 4 times ergo: 64 cards. To solve the "Patience" you need to complete 2 expeditions per suit. To do so you discard one of each card type of that suit on the discard that belongs to the deck where the card is. If you cannot complete an expedition there are a number of actions you can take by discarding to cards of the same type--if they are the same suit as well the action gets stronger. These actions include drawing a new card to the top, searching for a card, putting cards from the discard back in a deck and so on. It is less fiddly in my mind than Aerion was but it is not the deck building thing I feel I was promised. Pretty cards alone do not make for a satisfying solo game and I still think Onirim (which I have only played on the app) is the best of the bunch and the rest falls short. Remind me not get excited again for one of these.
