2-4, SPIEL 2019. Oct '19: Played first full 4 player game of Pax Transhumanity and I did manage to teach this faster than I had thought was possible. The players were brave jumping into this only half understanding the rules and not caring that they didn’t have a strategy to win this from the start. After a few rounds everyone had a much firmer grasp on how this game flows. We had to refer to the action flow chart a lot and clarify a few of the things (mostly when you get your cubes back and how quickly you can use them again to pay for actions). Despite that, rounds played really quickly because the decision space sometimes narrows down to “I need money” or “I prepared 2 turns for this one big action and now I can finally do it”. But we still had meaningful decisions to make and if everyone had started out knowing the rules it would have been a tough strategic competition. As it were, 3 of us mostly floundered through the game and 1 player got a few lucky breaks that propelled history forward. We ended the game on a tipping point with a nuclear war in space. With 2 - 2 - 2 -1 victory points, and so the wealthiest person won the game by a tiny margin. I started playing the game without much strategy and was largely broke in the second half… and managing your assets aka cubes is what makes or breaks a strategy. But it was still fun and I can see exactly how I should do differently next time. I think everyone on the table would play again.
